- May 1619 the Virginia Company heard that Robert Somerscales was about to take out (a patent) about tobacco; the court desired mr. Threr to speak with mr. Attorney general and learn whether the same be any way prejudicial to the company or not. On the 26th May mr. Threr reported that the patent would be very prejudicial to the company if the same came to pass and advised that the company make every effort to stop it. The company sent mr. Threr with foru other powerful people at seven o'clock the following morning to the attorney general's house and they wrote to Robert Somerscales asking him to attend the meeting. One year later the court discussed the ordering of tobacco and a very fit man named Somerscale who is very skilful in curing that plant whereby it may be made more profitable than it is, whereupon the court entreated the committee to treat with the said Sumerscales about it. On June 23rd 1620 they agreed that his plan would cost £15 000 for which they could raise stock. Mr. Somerscales is to write the preamble and on July 7th they appointed solicitors to complete the legalities of the patent. On July 12th mr. Robert Somerscales' project was approved and Robert Somerscales "became the first American to be granted a patent". However, since the Virginia Company does not mention him again et appears he went independent. In 1620 Robert was out of the country, hiding from creditors. In 1633 Robert lived at Ham in Essex and was described as a physick, but h was also "of great engagements" and could not leave his house. It was said that Robert had long since left the society of Grays Inn and had turned physician and lived in obscure places hiding from his creditors and not going out. In 1649 Robert appeared on behalf of his brothers in law and was a doctor of Physick living in Bath.
