Andrew Dishington (1560/65 - ca.1621 was the son of John Dishington, Sheriff of Orkney and Agnes? Stewart. Andrew says to be married to Margaret Elphinstone. (born ca. 1575 - Halland, South Ronaldsey island - . Death ?) But the widow after Andrew Dishington var Elisabeth Tulloch, a lease from 1627 states Elisabeth Tulloch as Andrew, surrviving widow: 03.07.1627, and Andrew,s widow is the owner in 1642 of 6 pence benorth the Burn. So Margaret must in that case have been the first wife of Andrew Dishington, but this married has so far not allowed to verify against primary sources. John and Andrew said to be descended from the Dishington of Andross, near Elie, Fife, the first of whom was son of Sir William Dishington and Elisabeth , sister of King Robert Bruce. Andrew was a Minister (of Rowsay?) on South Ronaldsey, and appears as Schoolmaster of Dunbar 1594; pres. by Earl Robert to the prebendary of St. Peter 26th.Feb.1595; app- master of the Grammar School of Kirkwall; min. of Stronness in 1599; trans, to Rausay and Egilsay in 1601; attended the Glasgov Assembly of 1610; was afterwards min. of Hoy (probably about 1614), being so designated in a lease of " the sax-penny land benorth the burne in Hoy " granted by his widow; adm. to this charge before 1617; died before 11th june 1627. (About 1621/22). He had a manse and glebe from George, Bishop of Orkney, which the prossessed during his incumbency, though these are stoted to have been withheld from the successor. It says that Andrew and? Margaret had this children mentioned. But since Andrews first mentioned child John was born ca.1600, as the father is considered alredy 35 years old, then it is probably most likely that his second wife Elisabeth Tulloch so is their mother. if this children was from the first married. The children was: 1. John (Andrewson) Dishington ( about 1600 - 2. Thomas (Andrewson) Dishington 3. Agnes (Andrewsdaughter) Dishington 4. Annabella (Andrewsdaughter) Dishington 5.James Andrewsson( = Jacob (Anderson) Dishington. Born about 1605, Holland, South Ronaldsey. Orkneyisland Jacob mowed to Norway , and are whritten as Andersen, he died in Bergen before 24.aug.1668, he was marries to Lucie Jansdatter , still living in 1683.

      Minister of Rowsay.

Jo Ben's 1529 "Descriptions of Orkney": Rowsay:
Rousay, as if it were the island of Rouland, is a large island, and the greater proportion of it is uncultivated. In circuit this island is eight miles, and contains very high mountains.
I "A geographical and statistical description of Scotland (James Playfair) beskrives Rowsay som en 4 miles long og 3 miles bred øy med 750 innbyggere, skilt fra nordøstkysten av Orknøyenes mainland av et en miles bredt sund. På sydvest kysten, vis a vis den lille øyen En-hallow, står the house of Westness.

About Andrew Dishington, Minister of Rowsay
      Wrong mother of the children?

He was married twice, first with Elizabeth Tulloch and second with Margaret Elphinstone. Margaret Elphinstone is stated as the mother of the children in many family trees, but I find no evidence of this anywhere. Does anyone have any info here? The only I can find is that Elizabeth Tulloch is stated as the mother in this secondary source:

7, nr. 51).
Nyne d. land heirof fewit to David King with the myle, for payment of the dewtie, and 6d. land fewit to Mr. Andro Dischingtoun sicklyk, payis in augmentation betuix thame, 8s. 4d.'
Utnevnt som 'Rector of Kirkwall Grammar school' 01.02.1595, og innsatt den 26.02.1595 (ifølge vedlegg til Alexander Peterkin: 'Rentals of the County of Orkney' app.8,s.65). Delok i 'Glasgow Assembly' 1610 (iføge Fasti).

Dishington
      From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dishington is a surname of Scottish origin. The name first arises in Northumberland where they were seated as lords of the manor in the shire of Dissington, Northumberland.

Spelling variations of this family name include: Dishington, Dischingtoun, Dissington, Dissyngton, Dyshington, Diston and many more.[1]
      History[edit]

Much of what is known of the early history of the Dishington family comes from a monograph by local historian Walter Wood entitled The East Neuk of Fife: its history and antiquities.[2]:213ff

The family history begins with Sir William Dishington who is listed among the compatriots of Alexander Ramsay of Dalhousie. Sir William married Elizabeth Bruce, daughter of King Robert Bruce and sister of Robert the Bruce (aka King Robert I). He held charters from King Robert and his son David II to the lands of Balglassie in Aberlemno and Tollyquhond in Forfarshire. He died around 1360.

Upon his death, Sir William's two sons split his estate: his son William (also styled Sir William Dishington) inherited the lands of Ardross, while John received lands in Longhermiston.

William the younger was held in high honor at the court of Edinburgh, holding positions of honor including bachillanus seneschal, Master of the Fabric of St. Mohan's Church, and in 1370, Sherriff of Fife. It is believed that William the younger was responsible for the construction of Ardross Castle. William had two children: son Thomas and daughter Elspath.

The generations of Dishingtons continue as:
Thomas Dishington of Ardross: Received a charter in 1402 from Robert III in which he is still acknowledged as nepoti nostro (our family), indicating that the family ties to the royal family were still recognized two generations after William the Elder's marriage.
      John Dishington, son of Thomas
Thomas Dishington, son of John: a captain at the Palace of St. Andrews
George Dishington, son of John and brother of Thomas
William Dishington, son of George: fiar of Ardross, slain at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh in 1547
Paul Dishington of Ardross, son of William: had two daughters who, upon his death became wards of the second Earl of Arran, who married them to two members of his family
John Dishington also a son of William and brother of Paul, moved the family to the Orkney Islands, where the family history is taken up by Buckham Hugh Hossack in his A Kirkwall in the Orkneys.[3]
      In Orkney[edit]

John Dishington was one of the Gentleman Adventurers of Fife who, in 1597, attempted to seize the Isle of Lewis from Clan MacLeod after the latter's claim to the land was set aside owing to constant feuding of the clan with neighbors and amongst themselves. When the attempt failed, many of the Adventurers (Dishington included) retreated to Orkney.

In Orkney, John found employment in the household of Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Orkney, where he served as sherriff and commissary of Orkney and Shetland, as well as attorney to Lord Robert.

John's son Andrew served as master of the grammar school in Orkney, and Andrew's son James served the Stewart family as an agent in Bergen, Norway. James married and remained in Norway, beginning the Scandinavian branch of the Dishington name.[4]
