      Mieszko III the Old (Polish: Mieszko III Stary; 1121? – March 13, 1202), of the Piast Dynasty, was Duke of Greater Poland, 1138-1202, and High Duke of all Poland, with interruptions, 1173-1202.
      Mieszko was the son of Bolesaw III Wrymouth, Duke of Poland, and Salome von Berg-Schelklingen, daughter of Duke Henry of Berg (of Wuerttemberg). Mieszko was Bolesaw's fifth son, and the ducal couple's fourth.
      Mieszko was Duke of Greater Poland, 1138-1202, and Duke of Kraków and High Duke of all Poland, 1173-1177, 1190, 1198/1199, 1202.

      Mieszko married:
      *ca. 1140, Elizabeth of Hungary, daughter of uknown King of Hungary (it is supposed that her father was Almos or Stephan II or Bela II);
      *ca. 1154, Eudoksia of Kiev, daughter of Izjaslav II, Grand Duke of Kyiv (Kievan Rus').
      Mieszko's children were:
      # Odon of Greater Poland;
      # Bolesaw of Kujawy;

      Biography
      In accordance with the testament of Poland's Duke Bolesaw III Wrymouth, Poland was divided into 4-5 hereditary provinces distributed among his sons, with the royal province of Kraków being reserved for the eldest son, who was tobe High Duke of all Poland.
      One of the provinces, Greater Poland, was granted to Bolesaw's third-oldest son, Mieszko (and was subsequently divided among Mieszko's descendants and successors). In 1173 Mieszko was promoted to the throne of Kraków and became High Duke of Poland (Latin: dux maximus, dux totius Poloniae); but he was soon expelled from Kraków by his younger brother, Casimir II, and from Greater Poland by his son. Mieszko III never abdicated his rights or ambitions, and returned to Kraków four times before he died in 1202.

      Mieszko der Alte (polnisch Mieszko III. Stary; * 1126; † 13. März 1202 in Kalisz) war ab 1138–1177/79, 1181/82–1202 Herzog in Großpolen, sowie 1173–1177, 1198–1202, als Mieszko III., Seniorherzog von Polen, aus der Dynastie der Piasten.

      Mieszko wurde um 1126 als dritter Sohn des Herzogs Bolesaw III. Schiefmund von Polen und seiner zweiten Gemahlin Salome von Berg geboren und erhielt im Testament des Vaters Großpolen als Herzogtum. 1146 nahm er am Aufruhr der Brüder gegen Wadysaw II. den Vertriebenen teil und knüpfte nach dessen Verbannung aus Polen enge Kontakte zu den sächsischen Fürsten: u.a. nahm er 1147 am Wendenkreuzzug teil, wobei er in der südlichen Abteilung unter Albrecht demBären mitzog. Es herrschte nämlich zwischen ihm und Heinrich dem Löwen ein Konflikt wegen des Polabenlandes, da beide Ansprüche darauf hegten.[1] Nach dem Tode seines Bruders Bolesaws IV. des Kraushaarigen 1173, bestieg er den Krakauer Thron. Er verwendete unter anderem die Titel dux maximus und dux totius Poloniae. In der Innenpolitik griff er zu sehr strengen Steuermaßnahmen, welches die Feindschaft der kleinpolnischen Magnaten hervorrief, die ihn 1177aus Krakau verjagten und seinen jüngsten Bruder, Kasimir II. den Gerechten, auf den Seniorthron beriefen. Gleichzeitiger Aufruhr des eigenen Sohnes Odon (Otto) in Großpolen zwang Mieszko, Asyl und Hilfe bei den Herzögen von Pommern zu suchen. 1181 gelang es Mieszko mit Hilfe pommerscher Truppen einen Teil von Großpolen mit Gnesen und Kalisz, das zu seiner Hauptstadt wurde, zurückzugewinnen.

      1191 wurde Kasimir der Gerechte in interne Kämpfe in der Rus eingeschaltet; Mieszko eroberte währenddessen Krakau zurück und wurde für kurze Zeit wieder Seniorherzog. Im Jahre 1194, nach dem Tode des Bruders Kasimir, griff er erneut nach dem Krakauer Thron und wurde wieder durch die kleinpolnischen Magnaten verjagt, die mehrheitlich Anhänger des minderjährigen Leszek waren.

      1198 gelang es Mieszko, als Vormund für den Neffen Leszek, abermalig an die Macht zu kommen. Er starb am 13. März 1202 in Kalisz und wurde dort bestattet.
