Paye Jepsen. Merchant and Ratmann in Flensburg. He was a well knownmerchant in Flensburg and must have benn born around 1380's, since heis listed "cum uxore Vrowe" in the list of members of the guild of theKauffmanns- Oder Liebfrauen Guild.
The guild was started in 1420 and from this year til 1441 about 91members were listed and after this year a new list was started.
The guild was very selective since just before his membership the Dukeof Slesvig Holstein Adolph name was entered and apart from the noblepeople the mayor and his counsel a number of honored people such as(Edel Leute) Jesse Rewentlow, Otto Ranzau, Marquart Seested,Bebedietus von Ahlefeldt all persons with a noble family history.
From the city registry it can be seen that he'd owned the seventhpeice of land on the West side of the main street or also called thebig street but South of Nordermarktzur Haelfte. The house consisted offive sections as well as afarm of wich a half was owned by him andthe other half belonged to Hune Pagesson, the new section namely the4th also belonged to Hune.
In the year 1434 he and his wife gave the Sct Marien church a third ofthe cost of a Luetgenhorn with two Lansten these items were rented andthe church paid an annual rental, the income from this was given tohis son Paul who was anoble man of this church, when he died then thechurch would receive the income.
At this time he must already have been a rather wealthy person intown, this is also proven through his businnes dealings for example inthe year 1438 he purchased a half share of a farm which the gray monksewned in Trogelsby and then he sold it to the Duke for the loan value.
It seems that in the year 1438 he was Ratmann, because the city'sofficial finalcial statement, which had just been started is his nameone of the first listed, since the city was in debt turning for nine?
In the year 1439 he lent the (Knappen) Went Frese 100 Rd and assecurity he was given on the 25 of November one farm a half mile southof the city in South Hackstedt and in addition two farms in JuebeckNorth West Slesvog from thesefarms he received 10 (Heischffel?) Ryeand 1 phenning per yrae in rental.
He did not live to see the repayment, he kept these farms as rentalfarms yielding income. Wenr Frese sold these farms to the bishop forthe same amount in April 14th 1463, which indicates that Paye Jepsenwas not alive to that year, since it is indicated that his widowshould receive 80 Rd of the payment.
The Paysens were noble with a weapon shield which consisted of an armlifted with a sword. It is pictured in Heinrich Rantzaus...CimbricaeChersonesi descripto... and also Jonas ab Elvevelt shows a drawing ofthis shield and he addsthis poem in Latin, which can roughly betranslated as follows:

Proud names are used by many families as a gift of life,
Show on the shield the loin wild from the Lybian sands,
However the nobles calls for duty and fight with sharp weapons,
Punish the evil, but gives the good shelter,
Please me with steel protected chest to strike the enemies rats,
The shining sword pleases me held in an iron fist.
